A large number of experiences associated with kundalini during meditation have been documented in a variety of spiritual texts. However, the relationship between these phenomena and the mechanisms of kundalini arousal has been less clear.
Prior work has focused on describing extreme experiences related to kundalini. While some of these reports were consistent with a particular model of kundalini, others were atypical. Consequently, it is difficult to interpret them in light of models.
This study explored kundalini-related experiences reported by 39 participants during meditation. The modality of the experience was analyzed, along with the participant’s number and the estimated lifetime hours of meditation. Results indicated that a large proportion of participants had experienced a variety of kundalini-related phenomena.
Among these were spontaneous anomalous experiences and rising sensations. These somatosensory experiences resemble prior clinical descriptions of kundalini. Interestingly, some participants experienced positive feelings. They were often associated with ecstatic states and positive affects.
However, other participants had negative experiences. These were sometimes associated with somatosensory, auditory and arousal-related sensations.
Anandamurti (1999) suggested a sequence of sounds that meditators could use to induce a progressive series of kundalini-related activities. These included an ocean, gongs, crickets and sweet flute. During the sequence, a naad-chakra mantra is chanted. Depending on the vibrations, the naad-chakra mantra entrains the subtle body of the aura. It opens the gateway to the higher domain of the higher Self.
As a result, an arousal-related phenomenon that can be linked to kundalini-related activity was reported by a significant proportion of participants. Although these experiences were not always accompanied by positive affect, they may have represented progress in raising the kundalini.
Further research on these exploratory findings is warranted. They may provide new avenues for interpreting meditation and contemplative experiences.
